5 Ways to Protect Yourself From Online Fraud

6 May 2020

The online world is a very risky place for Internet users if users don’t know how to protect themselves. It is a double-edged sword usage for them that comes with intense benefits if used properly and securely. But, it could also be highly intrusive to your personal information as well. So, here are 5 Ways to Protect Yourself From Online Fraud:

1. Check on the URL

Firstly, of course, look up what’s visible, and the link or URL can give out tons of information as well. The padlock logo at the top left of the browser identifies whether the site is secured with SSL(Secure Socket Layer) which encrypts user activity and information. Other than that, carefully check on the URL whether there’s a typo or not, cyber attackers might use similar domain names to trick the users to input sensitive information about themselves.

2. Illogical Deal

When there’s a deal popping out of nowhere, showing something that’s rare but selling for a cheap price, be careful with it. It is most likely an online fraud and is a scam. Especially during shopping sales on suspicious websites that target “thrifty” consumers but then immediately expose their information to scammers/hackers.

3. Use Unique Credit Card Number

Also known as one-time usage credit card number, a lot of people don’t know about the presence of this service. It works on credit cards issued by Apple, Bank of America. There are also websites that provide this service to greatly secure transactions on the Internet.

4. Use Credit Card or Paypal

By using these, it’s much safer than a normal debit card. During transactions, a debit card will expose your information directly to the seller. Meanwhile, a credit card or Paypal provides an extra layer of protection to safeguard you from falling into the victim’s hands.

5. Does a Thorough Research

When you see a deal that is too good to be true, you could look for reviews on the specific domain name or the specific product/service simply by googling it. Alternatively, you could do an image search using Google, this helps track the source of the image and helps to prove whether the deal is real or fake.
