5 Common Mistakes That Reduce Your Number Of Followers On Instagram

7 Dec 2018

The rapid growth of Instagram over the years has prompted more users to intensify efforts towards expanding their presence on the platform. However, compared to Twitter and Facebook, it is more difficult to increase your fan base on Instagram because social media users are usually more reluctant to click on ‘follow’. Nevertheless, to make it easy for you, here are the most common Instagram mistakes to avoid if you want to increase your audience.

1. Inconsistency

The number of followers and engagement you have depends on how frequently you post content for your audience. In other words, the more frequent you provide content for your audience, the more followers you get. Although it takes a lot of time, it actually pays to be consistent in creating posts for your followers. To maintain and expand your fan base, you will even need to put in more time to create content when you start having tens and hundreds of thousands of followers. The key is simply consistency.

Try to map out a schedule for posting by using a content calendar. This will not only help you to enhance the outlook of your feed, it will also help you to decide on when and what to post.

2. Lack of Engagement

Your followers will make no effort to even interact with you if you don’t reply to their comments. After all, that is why it is called ‘social’ media because they can do whatever they want.

Instagram is obviously a social network even though it is mainly focused on displaying your visual story to others. You are absolutely not doing enough by spending all your energy and time on posting alone, as this will not prevent your followers from unfollowing you.

3. No Interaction

It is important you make contact with other Instagram accounts in your niche if you really want to be a force to be reckoned with. By doing this, you can build better business relationships and collaborations with others.

Put in your best to expand your network by reaching out and building bonds with other accounts and influential individuals. By connecting with more people, your content will be exposed to a larger group of new individuals who probably know little or nothing about you.

4. Making too much promotion

Consumers are usually quick to tune out or block marketing content, and that is actually the main reason for using ad blockers. Since consumers avoid marketing content like a plague, they won’t pay attention to your posts if you sell too much.

Don’t make promotion your major target, rather focus on creating more organic content on your feed. In other words, you should create content that resonates with your followers instead of just asking them to buy your products outright.

5. No Focus

It is important to clearly define your identity because it makes your audience aware of who you really are as well as what your brand stands for. What this means is that people will follow you because of what they are expecting from you, as revealed in your brand, and you must try to meet this expectation for them to keep following you.

You should clearly define the niche of your Instagram account as well as the content you will be posting.
